undergraduate senior seminar

description

Undergraduate Senior Seminar in Macro
Designed for Columbia University Senior Undergraduate Economics Majors

Financial institutions are a pillar of the modern economy. Banks form a crucial link between borrowers and savers, channeling funds towards productive ventures, while balancing economic risks and liquidity. Nevertheless, the fundamental role that banks play also creates a critical instability in the financial system.

This course strives to offer students an understanding of financial intermediation and the role that banks and other financial institutions play in the economy. We study the particular historical episode of the 2008-009 Financial Crisis, investigate the root causes of this crisis, its amplification within the financial system, and finally consider how these disruptions spilled over and severely affected the real economy.
